Vegetable and Fruit Show 2017 gets underway in city

SHILLONG: A one-day  ‘Vegetable and Fruit Show 2017’  got underway on Tuesday  at U SoSo Tham Auditorium, Shillong organised by the horticulture department.

The show was organised under the theme: Moving towards Organic Agriculture. Fifteen different stalls from different parts of the East Khasi Hills district showcased organically produced vegetables, fruits, flower, dairy products and other animal products.

Commissioner and Secretary, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department P Sampath Kumar inaugurated the show on Tuesday.

Officials of the Department informed that the Vegetable and Fruit Show was organised as part of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) which was launched for holistic development of horticulture in the country.

The scheme integrates the ongoing schemes of National Horticulture Mission, Horticulture Mission for North East and the Himalayan States, National Bamboo Mission, National Horticulture Board, Coconut Development Board and Central Institute for Horticulture, Nagaland.

Meanwhile, Vegetable and Fruit Show 2017 was organized by Horticulture department  at State Central Library on Tuesday drew lot of crowds.

Speaking at the venue, P. Sampath Kumar, Commissioner and Secretary of Agriculture department said that Agriculture should not be ignored.

He added that the department of agriculture had come up with schemes to develop agriculture especially in terms of organic farming and the department was willing to extend help to people to take up organic farming.

Kumar urged the gathering to register themselves with different branches of the department to avail the benefits of organic farming.
