SHILLONG: While the Congress has limited the application fee for aspiring candidates to Rs 500, which is non-refundable, the principal rival in Garo Hills, NPP has gone steps ahead by fixing Rs 30,000 as application fee from interested candidates.
A regional election committee to invite applications from aspiring candidates for all the 24 seats in Garo Hills was formed by state president WR Kharlukhi on Tuesday.
Of the Rs 30,000 application fee, Rs 20,000 will be kept with the treasurer of regional election committee and the remaining amount will be given to the district treasurer. The money will be used for election purposes.
According to the notification, the regional committee has the power to decide on the selection of candidates in the 24 Garo Hills constituencies.
After the process of selection by the regional committee, the list will be forwarded to the state election committee, which will in turn forward it to the national election committee for announcement of candidates.
However, the notification said in rare cases, the state election committee may overrule the decision of the regional election committee.
“The final decision on any election matter within the party lies with the national election committee,” the notification said.
