SHILLONG: The video of a drunken hospital employee that was circulated on social media has raised questions about the state of affairs at government healthcare institutes.
The video shows a Grade IV employee at Tura Civil Hospital lying on the floor and speaking in a drunken stupor. Hospital sources confirmed that the person in the video is Biju Hajong.
The sources alleged that Hajong attends work in an inebriated state.
“He is more of trouble to all. This state of dangerous, disrespect and medical negligence had been going on for a long time under the eyes of the authority,” they said and termed the Civil Hospital ward kitchen as “Biju’s second alcohol bar/pub”.
According to the sources the story of Hajong is just the tip of an iceberg and this has exposed the inefficiency and weak authority of the custodian of the hospital.
They alleged that “several ugly events” in other institutions have surfaced on many occasions.
The sources, while terming the services of Grade IV staff as indispensable, said Hajong’s behaviour is a case of medical negligence and he should be punished. They cautioned that “the medical department, which is already in a sea of distrust, will sink in its misdeeds”.
Peeved at the alleged indifferent attitude of the authority, the sources stated, “They have even higher obligation to wrap under carpet his wrongdoings, not to come forward to the media and cause nuisance to the hospital.”
The sources urged the authorities concerned to take exemplary action against such medical negligence.
It may be recalled that a video of a commander who appeared to be drunk while leading an official parade at Ampati on Independence Day, this year, had gone viral on social media, including Facebook and WhatsApp.
