SHILLONG: The woman vendor who was found dead near Police Bazar last month was murdered for a mobile phone and Rs 2,000.
SP (City) Vivek Syiem said the murderer, Sarmaston D. Sangma (22) of Dholaigaon in Mawsynram, was arrested from Lachumiere on Friday.
Sangma was a cook at Step-In restaurant in Lachaumiere.
The mobile phone of the deceased has been recovered and the knife used to commit the murder has been recovered from Golden Gate Restaurant, Nongmynsong, where he worked earlier.
Sarmaston is also involved in several theft cases, including the one in his erstwhile workplace Golden Gate restaurant.
He will be produced before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Shillong, on Saturday and police remand will be prayed to complete the investigation for which early submission of chargesheet will be made.
The city police had arrested another person on Thursday in connection with the murder. After interrogation, it was found that the man, identified as Jacky S. Marak, (21) of Athiabari in West Khasi Hills, was not involved in the murder.
Anjana Sinha (36), of Macabbe Road, Polo, was brutally murdered on September 3 between 1-1.30 am. Sinha was a street food vendor at Police Bazar for over a decade. The incident took place when she went to keep her cooking table near the power house on the road leading to Lady Keane College.
Syiem said an FIR was lodged by her husband, Suresh Sinha, at Sadar Police Station and the case was registered.
Later, the Forensic Science Laboratory team in Shillong also visited the place of occurrence to gather evidence and the case was treated as a ‘special report’ case and was closely supervised.
The investigation was assisted by the special cell of East Khasi Hills as there was no witness or clue to the case.
