SHILLONG: National People’s Party (NPP) president, Conrad K Sangma has informed that it will put up candidates in all 60 constituencies of the state and has ruled out possibilities for political alliances in the run up to the 2018 Assembly elections in the state.
“NPP is going to be putting up candidates in all 60 constituencies and we are not tying up with any political party,” he categorically told the gathering at formation of Block Committee of the NPP and confirmation of office bearers at Pynursla on Saturday.
Often attacked by political rivals who criticise NPP as same as the BJP for NPP being an ally in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Center, Conrad took the opportunity to outline the NPP’s ideology which is not same as that of BJP.
“Other political parties are saying that the NPP is same as the BJP. Fighting elections and working on your ideology is one part and developing our state and our constituency is another part,” he said.
“Yes, we will have political alignment but it does not mean that we will compromise on our ideology,” he added.
“If, by chance tomorrow, Mamata Banerjee becomes the Prime minister of the country, NPP will have to work so that development comes to our people. Does that mean that I become Trinamool (Congress member)? Does that mean that I become a party and believe in Trinamool (Congress’) ideology? No, it does not.”
He highlighted that the NPP will fight and will work towards preserving the culture and preserving the rights of the people.
Conrad questioned whether any political party wrote to the Prime Minister to oppose celebration of Good Governance Day and Digital India Dayon Christmas Day and Good Friday, respectively.
“Nobody wrote any letter except the NPP. We wrote a letter to the Prime Minister to tell him that we are a Christian state and Good Friday and Christmas are the most important days for us,” he added.
