SHILLONG: Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Saturday blamed the BJP-led government at the Centre for hastily introducing the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The former external affairs minister, who was on a private visit to the city, told reporters that mistakes continue to occur in GST implementation because of the Centre’s haste.
“Now they have changed the rates because they have realised that elections are coming and the trading class is unhappy,” he said and added that economy under the NDA government “has come crashing down and cannot be fixed overnight”.
Khurshid questioned why the Centre was hasty with an important economic exercise such as GST.
“Please tell me why changes to GST that came two months ago were made yesterday. If there are mistakes correct it. But why should the mistake be in the first place? (This was) because the government is in a hurry but the software was not ready and neither was the hardware,” he said and added that even economists were critical of GST.
According to Congress leader, the Centre realised that the traders and many others were unhappy and hence the government changed the GST items yet gain.
“This will take a lot of time to fix and when the economy falters it is a painful exercise to fix it,” he added
According to Khurshid, BJP cannot run a government by changing every day.
“You must think seriously. My own view is that the economics of this government is absolutely zero,” Khurshid said.
