SHILLONG: In a bid to steer the party to victory in the Assembly 2018 election, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will not allot party tickets to any Tom, Dick and Harry as ticket aspirants will have to go through a thorough scrutiny.

State Party president, Sanbor Shullai, told reporters, “We have discussed that the NCP is a national party and the central election committee of the party will carefully examine (the party aspirants). We will not allot party ticket to every Tom, Dick and Harry.”

“Last election, we have 1-2 candidates who have secured 200-300 votes so we have discussed in the district and block level to scrutinise the aspirants and zero in on the best candidate –winnable candidate. If we cannot field candidates in all 60 seats, at least based on the record we could field 40-45 candidates,” he added.’

Shullai said that the party ticket aspirants could apply for tickets from October 10 and the last date is November 30.

Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) National Secretary and spokesperson Narendra Verma said that the party was gearing up to strengthen the party organization in the state.

According to him, the Mahila (women) or the youth front is all gearing up for the forthcoming general Assembly elections.

“The party has started the election process and the forms are available at the party office. The NCP is working very hard under leadership of (Sanbor) Shullai and Saleng Sangma,” he said.

He added that people who aspired to take the party ticket could approach the state party president.

“Keeping in mind the Assembly election, we will have NCP state convention on October 21 at Tura in which will be addressed by Praful Patel, general secretary of NCP,” Verma said.

He further informed that two senior leaders of the NCP, Tariq Anwar and Supriya Sule would visit the state and their programme would be chalked out with the state party president.
