SHILLONG: Tura MP Conrad Sangma has said he discussed with the Centre about improving roads in the plain belt of Garo Hills.
The national president of NPP, while addressing a gathering at Tikrikilla in West Garo Hills recently, assured the public, who apprised him of the poor road condition in Tikrikilla, Phulbari, Rajabala and Garobadha, of action.
“We will pursue the matter to declare the road (connecting the four places) as national highway, so that the people benefit from good communication without which people have to suffer and administrative delivery and functioning of government offices become difficult,” he said.
Enumerating the failures of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and , Conrad said, “The state government has failed to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Meghalaya and Garo Hills in particular. The government makes hollow claims but the reality is all before our eyes to see. We have to ensure that in the next year’s election, we choose a party that will not make only promises but deliver.”
The party will come up with a report on Mukul’s unfulfilled promises.
The meeting was convened to mobilise NPP workers in the run-up to the 2018 election and sensitise people on about the failures of the incumbent government.
Prominent leaders who attended the meeting included former minister Manirul Islam Sarkar, MDC Augustine Marak and a host of district and block leaders.
“In the age of technology and information, people have to be empowered with information. We believe in transparency and accountability,” he said.
The national leader said NPP would engage with the Centre to derive maximum benefits for the people of Meghalaya so that a wave of development reaches out to different nook and corner of the state.
“The state government in the past five years has launched several programmes, which are aimed to better livelihood. The projects look beautiful in papers but in reality nothing has reached to the major chunk of the population,” Conrad said.
Thousands of people attended the rally and pledged their support for NPP at the public meeting.
