SHILLONG: The State Cabinet has decided to reduce the salary of legislators by Rs 8,000.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister MM Danggo said the salary of MLAs was increased to Rs 2.10 lakh a month during the budget session this year but it was reduced after reviewing.
With this cut, the total emoluments of MLAs per month will be Rs 2.02 lakh.
Later, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said the government would be forced to increase the salary of the chief minister, the deputy chief minister and other ministers if the salary of MLAs is not reduced.
On being asked if the decision is an election gimmick, Sangma said irrespective of timings, the government has to do what is good.
“It is wrong to allege that everything is election gimmick,” Sangma said.
