International Day for Disaster Reduction observed in NGH

TURA: International Day for Disaster Reduction was observed on Friday under the theme ‘Home Safe Home’ by the District Disaster Management Authority, North Garo Hills where focus was made on reducing the number of affected people during disasters, thereby contributing to saving homes and livelihoods.

Briefing the objective of the programme at Resubelpara Circuit House, District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO), P A Marak said the programme calls for partnership of all stakeholders to device effective actions in alleviating the community risk against disaster.

Marak informed that a series of mock drills on earthquake and fire etc have been demonstrated in different areas of the district to different people of the community in the past few months with the sole aim of disseminating awareness on disasters preparedness, mitigation and disaster reduction.

On the occasion, individuals also shared experiences faced during the course of disasters who include district officials as well as the general people.

An audio visual on various disasters was displayed. Essay competition on topics like ‘Be smart, be prepared’, pre disaster preparedness, effective disaster response and Prevention and mitigation of natural disaster was also conducted for school students of the area.
