SHILLONG/ NONGSTOIN: On the occasion of ‘World Disaster Management Day’, Assam Regimental Centre under Headquarters 101 Area conducted Joint Mock Disaster Management Exercise at Ri-Bhoi district, on October 13 in coordination with local civil administration.
The aim of the exercise was to practice evacuation of civilian population from disaster affected areas in remote hilly region of the district to relief camps. The Army had set up a command and control centre along with relief camp at Village Lumumpih under Umsing Block.
In Nongstoin, the District Disaster Management Authority here observed the International Day for Disaster Reduction with the theme, ‘Reducing the number of affected families by disasters”.
A two-day sensitisation cum training programme on disaster preparedness and was organised at St Peter’s Higher Secondary School for teachers, students, scouts and guides. The training touched aspects of the school safety plan, emergency method of search and rescue, role and responsibilities of school response teams, fire safety, first aid and mock drill.
The resource persons among others comprised S Kharmawphlang, the medical health officer, Nongstoin, Jonathan Mawthoh, the district disaster management officer, Nongstoin and Sainbor Pathaw and Larikynti Dkhar of DDMA, Nongstoin. The valedictory function was graced by R. Tham, managing secretary, St Peter’s Higher Secondary School. A mock drill on earthquake and fire safety was organised at St Peter’s Higher Secondary School in coordination with the Incident Response Teams of the district. Prizes for the essay competition were also distributed among the winners and participants during the function.
