SHILLONG: Regular casual workers of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) under the banner, MeECL Progressive Workers’ Union will continue their protest including lunch break protest against the corporation.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, general secretary of the MPWU, Angelina M. Hynniewta said that the indefinite strike started from October 11.
Demanding for talks between the Union and the management, she said, “We will continue our strike till the MeECL CMD (Chairman-cum-Managing Director PS Thangkhiew) calls us for talks. For now, he is keeping silent”.
The protestors held an agitation outside the gate of MeECL with placards in hand and the protestors were firm as they asserted, “We will not sign any contract agreement.”
MPWU also opposed the authorities move to make them sign a contract which they alleged is illegal which contains clauses that barred them from seeking permanent jobs with the Corporation, deny EL, PF, gratuity, health incentives and others.
It is learnt that there are 1400 casual workers of MeECL.
