SHILLONG: The National People’s Party (NPP) has maintained that the party so far has not taken a call on who should be the chief ministerial candidate or who should head the government provided the NPP forms the Government next year in Meghalaya.
Speaking to The Shillong Times over the phone on Wednesday, NPP senior leader, James Sangma said, the party was yet to take a call on the matter of its chief ministerial candidate.
Dropping an apparent hint at change of leadership in the state, the National People’s Party (NPP) leader and Tura MP, Conrad Sangma, had earlier said that that leaders like Pynursla MLA, Prestone Tynsong would be able to lead the state.
James Sangma said, “The selection of poll candidates is under the process by the Election Committee and we hope to complete the exercise as soon as possible keeping in mind that the elections may be held in February”.
On being asked about the number of seats which the NPP is targeting in the state, Sangma claimed that the NPP was becoming stronger by the day as it was getting tremendous support from the people of the state.
“People are fed up of this Government and this (Congress-led) Government has messed up everything,” he said
The NPP leader also expressed his optimism that the party would form the next Government in Meghalaya with majority of legislators from the party itself.
Responding to a query, James Sangma said that the party was open to accommodate more leaders from other parties who would like to join the NPP.
The NPP has received a major boost ahead of the elections after top leaders of the state Congress including Prestone Tynsong, Rowell Lyngdoh, and Dhar brothers have deserted Congress and made it clear that they would join the NPP.
