SHILLONG: A reply to an RTI application shows Tura town is part of Danakgre A’king, former ANVC-B chairman Bernard N Marak has said.
The reply from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council to the RTI filed by Marak says the town is under the A’king. It also said there are four mauzadars in Garo Hills and that Danakgre falls under the village court of Dobasipara-16 as per records in map and ‘wareng’ (boundary).
Marak said some people with vested interests made desperate attempts to violate the age-old landholding system in Tura town.
“In Garo Hills, the presence of nokma is the cultural identity over land. Land in Garo Hills always belongs to the clan, or ‘machong’, under the custody of the A’king Nokma. This is a commonly accepted practice in Garo Hills which was changed in Tura. Desperate attempts were made to violate the landholding system in Tura which is proven wrong by GHADC itself,” he added.
A’king Nokma Enilla Ch Marak was demanding abolition of Khas Mahal in Danakgre stating that the term, also known as ‘Mauza X’, was in Assam Schedule, which does not fall under the constitutional provision of the Sixth Schedule in Garo Hills.
The former rebel chief said some people made it an issue and went to the extent of demanding removal to the A’king Nokma.
