TURA: The Garo Hills State Movement Committee is holding a mega rally here to drum up support for creation of a separate Garoland state.
The move to hold the rally on November 15 comes in the wake of the August meeting the committee leaders had with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his deputy, Kiren Rijiju, in New Delhi, followed by submission of a memorandum demanding the creation of Garoland state carved out of the existing five Garo Hills districts in Meghalaya.
“The central meeting with home minister Rajnath Singh, minister of state Kiren Rijiju and Shillong MP Vincent Pala was fruitful and a copy of the memorandum was also submitted to the office of the President of India and the Prime Minister’s Office,” said Nikman Ch Marak, chairman of the GHSMC in a statement to the media. According to the GHSMC chairman, the executive committee held a meeting in September and decided to hold the rally at Chandmari playground here on November 15.
According to the committee, the mega rally would be the 21st of its kind organised here.
“This movement for separate state is a demand under the Constitution of India to safeguard tribal societies like the Garos under Article 3 and creation of a new state under the States Re-Organisation Act of 1956,” said Marak.
