Probe ordered into death of 99 cattle in Pynursla

SHILLONG: Police have ordered an inquiry into the death of as many as 99 cattle in Pynursla recently.
The cattle died due to inclement weather following the rains.
As many as 134 cattle meant to be smuggled out of Meghalaya were seized by the BSF on October 18 night during the joint operations with the police.
Later, they were auctioned off by the Customs.
East Khasi Hills SP, Davis Marak said on Monday that the people who bought the cattle after auction, did not turn up to claim them and hence they were kept in an open area near Pynursla police station.
Due to the adverse weather condition following the incessant rain, 99 cattle died and only 35 survived.
The SP said that a veterinarian examined the cattle and found that they died due to inclement weather.
“Since there was a fear of epidemic, we have disposed them of “,the SP said.
The official said the sub divisional police officer of Sohra, Nishant Kumar is carrying out the probe into the incident.
Call for policy decision
In the context of death of the cattle, the SP called for a policy decision on matters related to maintenance of cattle after their seizure and auction.
The aspects related to food , health and shelter of the cattle after their seizure will have to be examined and for this a policy decision on the part of the government is the need of the hour, he said.
