SHILLONG: With work to implement the New Shillong Township (NST) project making headway, the state urban affairs department has taken the initiative of constructing roads in the area.
The NST project was conceived several years back with an aim to de-congest the city.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Monday, state urban affairs minister, Ronnie V Lyngdoh said road expansion work by the public works department from Nongmynsong to the area under New Shillong Township was under way.
Structures such as IIM Shillong, NIFT, Meghalaya Assembly, Information Technology park, Shillong International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture, government guest houses of Nagaland and Mizoram, Reid Chest Hospital, English and Foreign Language University are lined up to be developed in the new township area.
On the other hand, internal roads with utility are also under construction in the township area.
Lyngdoh informed that the government was looking at constructing wide roads in the area.
The ongoing project in the area includes improvement, widening including metalling and blacktopping of Shillong Diengpasoh Road from Nongmynsong to Mawdiangdiang in phase-I.
Under phase II, the work related to improvement, widening including metalling and blacktopping of Shillong Diengpasoh Road from Itshyrwat to Mawdiangdiang will be taken up.
Improvement, widening including metalling and blacktopping of the road from Mawdiangdiang to IIM will be taken up under phase-III.
“More roads would also be taken up in the area under phase IV,” the minister said.
On the allotment of land which was acquired by the state government in the area, Lyngdoh informed that most of the plots in the area have been allotted to different departments and agencies.
The state urban affairs minister however said the departments that have been allotted land in the area must immediately build their infrastructure failing which the allotted land would be handed over to other departments which require land.
Earlier, the state urban affairs department took land from the sports department to hand it over to the Meghalaya Assembly Secretariat.
