TURA: Bolstered by recent events in which sitting MLAs cutting across party lines have indicated their inclination to join the NPP, Tura Lok Sabha, MP, Conrad K Sangma has said that the NPP would emerge as the single largest party and will form the next government in the state after Assembly election of 2018.
He told a crowd during a campaign meeting in South West Garo Hills that there was a huge expectation from the people of Khasi and Jaintia Hills for the NPP.
“We are expecting as many as 18 seats in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region and nothing short of 15 seats from the Garo Hills. We will form a single party government. If our calculations are right, we will form the government for the people of Meghalaya and work together to realize the dreams and fulfill the aspirations of the people,” said Conrad Sangma at the public rally.
He said that politicians cutting across party lines are coming to the NPP and spoke about recent developments in which Congress and UDP leaders from Khasi Hills had expressed their support for the party of Late P A Sangma.
“Politicians are confident that NPP is an alternative to end the misrule of the Congress party in Meghalaya,” stated the Tura MP.
He recalled that some years ago, people in Khasi and Jaintia Hills had perceived the NPP as a Garo party but over time understood that it was party for the people of the north east, the marginalised, minorities and the vulnerable sections of society.
As a member of Parliament representing Tura, Conrad said that he had made efforts to raise the voice of the people of Garo Hills, Meghalaya and the north East and raised concerns for the tribals, Christians and the minorities.
“There is a strong wave for the NPP in Meghalaya. We have to remain united,” Said Conrad during the public rally while appealing to the public to give their support to his party.
He also took potshots at the Congress mentioning that people have rejected the grand old party in 24 states across India.
“Congress party has been reduced to four states. In Assam, Arunachal and Manipur, Congress party has been rejected. There is a similar wave in our state and we are sure people will reject Congress here as well,” he claimed.
It is worth mentioning that Congress did secure the single largest party status in Manipur during the recent elections but failed to cobble up a majority thereby making way for a BJP-NPP led government to be formed, while in Arunachal the entire Congress legislators switched over to the BJP.
The NPP chief accused the ruling Congress in Meghalaya of doing nothing for the general public.
“People are not reaping the benefits of the welfare programmes and development because Congress party has been selective in allotment of schemes to the people. We will unearth their unholy vision to the people,” warned the Tura MP.
