SHILLONG: The BJP has launched a scathing attack against Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, terming him “the most corrupt CM in India” while alleging “total corruption in Meghalaya” under his leadership.
“In the context of North East politics, Congress has been ruling for the past four-five decades and has totally destroyed the economic and social fabric of the Northeast and in the specific context of Meghalaya. Unfortunately for the people of Meghalaya, Mukul Sangma is counted as the most corrupt chief minister in India,” national secretary of BJP Scheduled Tribe Morcha, Hayithung Bill Lotha told reporters here on Wednesday.
“Sangma is preceded by former Manipur chief minister, Okram Ibobi Singh who featured in the top list of most corrupt CMs,” Lotha said.
He said he was shocked to learn that even in the chief minister’s constituency of Ampati, the roads were replete with potholes with big cracks underneath the rocks even as he claimed that the constituency received the maximum state resources and funding.
“I want to question the chief minister – where has all the money vanished? The roads of Ampati has become like a fishery where people can engage in fishing,” he remarked.
“There is so much corruption in the state,” he said.
Criticising the chief minister, Lotha alleged that Sangma has turned out to be the “grandmaster of false commitments and false promises,” as well as the “grandmaster of public announcements.”
He referred to the creation of three new districts ahead of the 2013 Assembly elections, saying that the districts were yet to be fully functional. “These days he (Sangma) has inculcated the habit of going around entire Meghalaya to announce the creation of new sub-divisions, development blocks, schools, roads, hospitals and toilets. He has been busy laying foundation stones in the past six months. He has been sleeping in the past years,” Lotha alleged.
Lotha further alleged that seven Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) roads were sanctioned at an amount of Rs 100 crore but were not implemented in reality.
The PMGSY roads are Mawlangsu to Mawphanlur, Mawlangsu to Rambrai, Rambrai to Mawdoh, road connectivity from Nonglang Langpih, Nonglang to Seinduli road, another road from Rambrai to Kyrshai and Rambrai to Chaygaon road.
“On paper, the project has been implemented but there is hardly any road visible. It is all like jungle,” he said.
Asked to substantiate his claims on the seven PMGYS roads which have not been implemented on the ground, he said, “Through RTI, we can prove it.”
“When it is brought to the notice of the central government, we will immediately start the enquiry, since it is a central project. Even the CBI can be pressed into service,” Lotha said.
He went on to add that the scholarship of the students were delayed, which affected their studies.
Lotha also referred to the “rape of a minor” that took place at a guest house (Marvelene’s Inn) and alleged that the state government was shielding the sitting MLA.
“If found guilty, the sitting MLA will go to jail,” he said.
The MLA in question is Home (Police) Minister HDR Lyngdoh in which the guest house, Marvelene’s Inn, belonging to his relatives, was mired in controversy over the rape of a minor.
