SHILLONG: Commuters on the Guwahati-Shillong road had a harrowing time after being stranded in a traffic jam for long hours with three trucks breaking down on the Umsning stretch of the road.
Ri Bhoi police informed that one truck broke down in the area in the morning while two more met with a similar fate in the evening.
Many people travelling on the road were delayed for hours due to the traffic snarl.
Even the chairman of the Central Silk Board, K.M. Hanumantharayappa, who was scheduled to reach the city by 5pm, was delayed by two and half hours besides.
Meanwhile, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has stated the repair work on the Umsning stretch was in full swing. The development comes in the wake of a High Court directive to the authority to speed up repair work on the dilapidated stretch.
NHAI sources assured that the patch and the pothole repair on the stretch would be completed by the October 31 deadline even as it regretted the inconvenience caused to commuters.
“The work of full overlay will continue unabated till its completion. The residents of Umsning town are happy with the maintenance work,” an NHAI source claimed.
