‘Justin supporters misleading people’
SHILLONG: A Meghalaya People’s United Front (MPUF) leader in East Jaintia Hills has said it was misleading to announce that Khliehriat West would support Justin Dkhar, the MLA of Khliehriat. Asserting that a section of supporters have misled the people, the MPUF leader, Michal Chrymang alleged that Dkhar had misused and misappropriated schemes. He further questioned what development Dkhar had brought in Khliehriat despite being the district headquarters of East Jaintia Hills.

Deadline extended for electoral roll revision
NONGSTOIN: In connection with the Special Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls with reference to January 1, 2018, the Deputy Commisioner (Election) West Khasi Hills district Nongstoin informed that the Election Commission of India has extended the period of filling claims and objections up to November 30, 2017 so that a special verification drive within the ongoing summary revision can be undertaken in which the booth level officers would conduct house visits for the purpose. All eligible citizens are encouraged to participate in the Special Revision activities and to contact the concerned booth level officer of their polling station for assistance.

Technical Workshop on Coffee held 
SHILLONG: A technical workshop on post harvest management and market linkages of coffee was held today at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Laitumkhrah.
The programme was jointly organised by the Coffee Board, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) and Soil and Water Conservation Department. Soil and Water Conservation Minister R V Lyngdoh graced the plenary session as chief guest. Addressing the gathering, Lyngdoh said that coffee farming is one of the sources of income for the coffee growers in the state. He hoped that through this workshop, coffee growers will be sensitised on the important aspects of coffee plantation which will help them to further increase the productivity and income for a sustainable livelihood. Director, NRM, MBDA, RRBR Thabah, joint director (Extension), Coffee Board, NER, Dr. V G Gudde Gowda, officials from the Soil and Water Conservation Department, MBDA and Coffee Board was also present during the function. 

Disaster preparedness event at Nongstoin
NONGSTOIN: The District Disaster Management Authority organised a disaster preparedness and disaster mitigation programme as part of the National Day for Disaster Reduction here. The theme of the programme, which got under way on October 23, was “Disaster Preparedness is everyone’s responsibility”.A two-day training on village disaster management plan, role of village disaster management teams (VDMTs), first aid and basic search and rescue was organised for (VDMTs), youth organisations and women’s groups at Mawkhlam Nongpyndeng.This was followed by a two-day training programme on basic search and rescue and first aid for National Service Scheme volunteers and National Cadet Corps. The training was imparted by Jonathan Mawthoh , district disaster management officer, District Disaster Management Authority, Nongstoin, disaster management professionals, Sainbor Pathaw and Larikynti Dkhar, SK Kharmawphlang, medical health officer, CHC Nongstoin and his team, W. Nonglang, inspector , CTI , Meghalaya and his team, C. Marbaniang, fireman, Fire and Emergency Services and his team. A mock exercise simulating an earthquake of 7.6 on the Richter scale was also conducted at Mawkhlam Nongpyndeng and Nongstoin College on Friday. The District Disaster Management Authority will also observe the National Day for Disaster Reduction in Nongstoin town on October 30.

BSF seizes cattle worth lakhs in EKH
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF) has seized over 42 cattle from the Indo-Bangladesh border recently. In a statement issued on Friday, BSF said its troops deployed at Umsyiem in East Khasi Hills recovered 13 cattle worth more than Rs 2 lakh. On Wednesday night, BSF troops carried out an operation at Muktapur in the district and seized 16 cattle. In another incident, the troops deployed at Kasinda seized 13 cattle worth over Rs 2 lakh. A Tata Pickup van loaded with cattle was also detained at Shella. The seized cattle were handed over to concerned department for further legal action. 

Devkota birth anniversary
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Nepali Sahitya Sammelan is celebrating the 109th birth anniversary of Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota at Babu Mani Singh Gurung Auditorium here on October 29. “A multilingual poets’ symposium and staging of Muna Madan, a creation of Devkota, will be the attractions of the celebration among other cultural activities,” said Kabita Chettri, the general secretary of the Sammelan. “This is for the first time that a dramatised version of Muna Madan will be staged,” Chettri said.
