Umkon weavers get marketing facility

NONGPOH: The common facility centre cum handloom production unit under the state department of sericulture and weaving was inaugurated at Umkon village in Ri Bhoi district on Friday.
The centre was constructed under the special central assistance scheme of 2012-13 at a cost Rs 40 lakh. I.A Diengdoh, joint director, handloom graced the occasion as the chief guest. Besides, M. Makri, the chairman of Umling community and rural development block, headmen from various villages, village elders, SHGs from different clusters of the area and weavers from different groups and villages were present.  
 Lauding the weavers of the area, the joint director said their work has been immensely beneficial and constructive. He further said the common facility centre would facilitate marketing of indigenous products and help uplift the socio-economic condition of the indigenous groups of the area.
Diengdoh hoped the scheme would also cater to the needs of all weavers and trainees, particularly the unemployed youths to create avenues for self-employment.
He further appealed to the weavers and trainees to work hard for a better livelihood.
