SHILLONG: The North East Frontier Railway (NFR) recently took up the matter of the halting of the railway project in the state with the Meghalaya Governor, Ganga Prasad
An official from the NFR said that they met and apprised the Governor about the present status of the railway projects in the state.
It was informed that the Governor in the meeting said that he could write to the State Government on the matter.
According to officials, the NFR has also tried to seek an appointment with the Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma on the matter but they have not been successful as of now.
It may be mentioned that the state government in July this year had asked the railway authorities to put the railway project on hold to dispel all kinds of mistrust and misgiving before resumption of work.
The official informed that there was no clarity on part of the State Government as to when the work would resume adding the contractor has already walked out of the project since he had to face heavy losses after his equipment were burnt on two occasion.
So far, even the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (KHADC) has not given its No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the project from Byrnihat till Lailad, a village around 17 kilometers from Byrnihat.
The cost of the proposed railway line, nearly 20.5km, linking Tetelia in Assam with Byrnihat in Ri-Bhoi district, is estimated around Rs 496 crore. The length of the track in Meghalaya is just 2.5km.
