National Day of Disaster Risk Reduction observed at Tura

Tura: Together with the rest of the nation ‘National Day of Disaster Risk Reduction was observed here at the District Auditorium by the District Disaster Management Authority, West Garo Hills Tura with the theme “Live to Tell”.

West Garo Hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi, in his address as chief guest, cautioned that disaster was such that it could occur anytime in the form of earthquakes, thunderstorm, cyclones and mostly happen without prior warning except in certain instances like rainfall, cyclone, floods.

“Therefore, we need to plan and prepare in order to mitigate and respond to the consequences of this kind of disaster if it happens in future,” said Bakshi.

He also stressed on the importance of Disaster Risk Reduction- Management and Plan for the way we respond to these disasters is important and urged the heads of all schools of the town to have their own school safety plan. He mentioned that the role and responsibility of each person was very important in the eventuality of any disaster striking in the future.

District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO) West Garo Hills, James D Sangma informed about the importance of awareness and other related measures for disaster risk reduction in the region.

Earlier in the function, Extempore Speech, Slogan and Drama competition were also organised which was participated by various schools in and around the town.
