SHILLONG: Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma who has not enrolled for Aadhar has asked the Central Government not to make unique identity Aadhar mandatory for the people of Meghalaya.
Talking to newsmen here on Wednesday, Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma said that he has already discussed the matter with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and both them have agreed to move in the right direction over the matter.
Sangma, however, said that there were certain challenges when students from Meghalaya studying outside are asked for Aadhar and hence the State Government is not stopping their enrolment for Aadhar.
“They (Central Government) must understand the complex challenges and concern in the North Eastern which is unique,” Chief Minister said while urging the whole North Eastern states to come together and take up the issue collectively.
Maintaining that right to privacy is crucial for democracy, Sangma also informed that he had sought a report from the authorities about a village where people have stopped sending their children to schools after the school pressurised them for Aadhar
The Chief Minister also lamented that there was a total lack of synergy and coordination among the different authorities of the Union Government as different authorities are giving diverse direction to the people on the issue of Aadhar
According to Sangma, as the county was yet to have national Register of Citizens, the segregation of genuine citizens and other groups was still an issue in the region.
