BJP committee elects spokesperson
SHILLONG: The Shillong City BJP District Executive Committee meeting was held on the October 31 at the state BJP office in Lachumiere. Members from different Mandals, including the state vice president Earnest Mawrie, state vice president in-charge of state media cell JA Lyngdoh and officials of the city district committee attended the meeting. The meeting unanimously elected Sonny L Khyriem as the spokesperson of the Committee with immediate effect. Khyriem is also the 18th West Shillong BJP Mandal president and had joined the BJP in 2015.
Motorcycle expedition team reaches Bangladesh on day 2
SHILLONG: The Tri Nation Motorcycle Expedition flagged off by the Assam Rifles on Monday, reached Sylhet Bangladesh on Tuesday. The morning of day 2 saw them driving off from BGB Sector HQ Sylhet for Sreemangal. The expedition team was received by Col Ashraf, BGB Sector Commander at Sreemangal. Lt Gen Shokin Chauhan AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, DGAR was at location to greet the team. Later, a close contested friendly Volleyball Match was played between Assam Rifles Expedition Team and BGB (winners). The expedition team will depart for the next phase of the journey from Sreemangal to Agartala, Tripura on Wednesday.
Media Certification and Monitoring Committee constituted
SHILLONG: To ensure free and fair conduct of the upcoming Legislative Assembly Election 2018 in Meghalaya, the state level Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) was constituted with the chief electoral officer, Meghalaya as the chairman. The members of the Committee include additional chief electoral officer, expenditure observer (to be nominated by CEO), director, information and public relations, deputy director of field publicity, Shillong and W Rapheal Warjri, Media Plus, media representative. The joint chief electoral officer will be the member secretary. The functions of the Committee is to decide on appeals against orders of the MCMC headed by the additional CEO/district election officers on certification of advertisement as per ECI’s instructions, to examine all cases of paid news on appeal against the decision of District MCMCs and to take up suo moto action and direct the concerned DEO/ROs to issue notice to the candidates or political parties, MIPR informed.
Stickers for local taxis and auto rickshaws
SHILLONG: The office of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills on Tuesday released a statement regarding the issue of stickers with allotted numbers. The statement informed all local taxi or auto rickshaw owners of East Khasi hills district that the issue of stickers with allotted numbers has been extended till November 30. Owners or their representatives are requesyted to produce original copies along with photocopies of the RegistrationCertificate, FitnessCertificate, InsuranceCertificate, Permit, Trading License for NonTribal owners, ProfessionalTax, PassengerTax, M.L.M.T.UCertificate and Pollution Certificate at the time of issuing the stickers which will be kept for office records, the statement informed. After all the documents have been found to be valid, a sticker will be issued and it should be pasted on the left side of the front Windshield, it added.
HIV awareness prog held
NONGPOH: In an effort to spread awareness on the various ill effects of the dreaded HIV/AIDS and drug abuse amongst the school students, the Awakening Indigenous Welfare Association of Raid Madan Kyrdem on Monday organised an awareness programme at Klew Presbyterian Secondary School in Ri Bhoi district. Besides school students, the programme was also attended by teachers as well as village elders of Klew village. AIWA president, Soiroy Nongkynrih presided over the programme whereas ICTC counselor from Nongpoh Civil Hospital, J Tariang, as a resource person, enlightened the gathering on the various effects of HIV/AIDS and drugs and its prevention. ”We need the wholehearted participation of the society at large in order to reduce this dreaded disease by spreading the message of its ill-effects to the human body and the society,” Tariang said adding that despite being an incurable disease, there are a lot of ways to prevent from being infected, and that is possible through education.
One arrested for rape
NONGSTOIN: Aiban Syiemlieh, Sordar of Kynshi Bangla filed an FIR against Probingshon L Nonglait (23) who allegedly raped a minor girl (11) of Kynshi Bangla under West Khasi Hills. Nonglait, who is her uncle, committed the heinous crime on September 7 at around 1.00pm in his residence and threatened to kill her if she confesses to her parents. The Mairang Police on Tuesday arrested the accused and a case was registered under POCSO Act.
Man electrocuted
NONGSTOIN: A resident of Mawlangsu village in West Khasi Hills was electrocuted on Tuesday. During the spot inquiry conducted by the Nongstoin police it was known that Hundarsing Wahlang was electrocuted while he was repairing the loose electric wire in the electric post at Mawlangsu village on Tuesday at about 10am. All legal formalities were observed and the body was handed over to the relatives after the post mortem exemption order from the Magistrate. In this connection, the Headman of Mawlangsu village, Baristar Marngar submitted his written information and case was filed under section 174 Cr.P.C.
One dead, two injured in separate mishaps
SHILLONG: One person died and others were injured in a series of road accidents in Ri Bhoi district. On October 31 circa 7.45 pm, a truck (WB-23C-2897) fatally knocked down one Md. Subhash Sheikh at 18th Mile, Byrnihat. Necessary formalities have been observed and the cadaver was sent to Civil Hospital Nongpoh for post mortem examination. On the same day, an accident took place between one scooty (ML-10A-7809) ridden by Kopil Chettri and one Hyundai i-20 car (AS-01BR-5165) at Down Gate, Nongpoh. As a result, the scooty rider sustained injuries and was hospitalised. In another incident that occered on the same evening, one bus (ML-10-1340) knocked down one pedestrian Risibon Rynjah at Umran Dairy (RB). As a result, Rynjah sustained injuries and was shifted to Super Care Hospital, Shillong.
