Assam regiment conducts 34th biennial conference
SHILLONG: The Assam regiment 34th Biennial Conference was conducted from November 1-2 at the Assam Regimental Centre. Lieutenant general B S Negi, UYSM, YSM, SM, VSM**, ADC, PhD, general officer commanding-in-chief, central command and colonel of the Assam Regiment and Arunachal Scouts attended the conference. Major General Sanjay Gupta, inspector general of Assam Rifles (North) and major general P S Behl, general officer commanding, 21 Mtn Div along with all Battalion Commanders of the regiment and other serving and veteran dignitaries were also present. It was for the first time in the history of Assam Regiment and Arunachal Scouts, that an Army Commander has taken over as Colonel of the regiment. The General Officer also felicitated the hardworking serving and veteran officers, junior commissioned officers and other ranks.The conference discussed modalities and issues of the regiment to ensure continuous progress.
Local schools to represent state in natl science congress
SHILLONG: The two day ‘state level congress’ of the 25th National Children’s Science Congress, 2017 concluded on November 1. The function was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister RC Laloo in the presence of PBO Warjri, retd IAS chief secretary and present chief information commissioner, among others. After two days of presentation of projects by the ‘child scientists’ of the state, eight projects were selected to represent the state at the national level to be held at Science City, Gandhinagar, Gujurat from December 27- 31. The schools selected include Shillong Public School, St Thomas Hr. Sec School Little Star Hr. Sec School, Mawkyrwat, Jaintia Hr Sec School, Jowai, Christian Academy Shillong, KJP Hr Sec School Shillong, Pariong Presbytery Hr Sec School. Projects from Shillong Public School and Jaintia Hr Sec School will also participate in the Indian Science Congress to be held from January 3- 7, 2018 at Osmania University, Hyderabad. Meritorious students who secured highest marks in the science and technology subject during the SSLC examination 2017 were also felicitated at the event.
IIT-Kgp Spring Fest from Jan 26
SHILLONG: The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, will organise the 59th edition of Spring Fest, its annual social and cultural milieu, from January 26 to 28. Spring Fest conducts a multitude of events encompassing 11 genres. An array of events is being planned for next year. IIT-Kharagpur’s social initiative, Umang: Stand Up to Stigma, aims to tackle mental health issues head on. In the past, the festival had recorded footfall of over 50,000. This year, Spring Fest successfully conducted Hitch Hike, the nationwide prelims for five of its flagship events — Nukkad, SF Idol, Shake a Leg, Two for a Tango and Shuffle in October in six cities across India, namely Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Bhopal.
State artistes win 3 awards at NE youth fest
NONGPOH: The Meghalaya contingent at the 5th North East Youth Festival in Gangtok has won three prizes in rock music, folk dance and solo instrumental categories. Pantocrator from Wahiajer in West Jaintia Hills became the winner in the rock band competition. Artistes from Resulbepara became the first runner-up in the folk dance competition. In the instrumental (guitar) solo category, Stewart Kevin Lyngdoh Marshillong of West Khasi Hills became the winner. The state contingent comprising 80 youths from different districts participated in the three-day festival that began on October 28. The team, which was sponsored by the Directorate of Youth Affairs and Sports, was escorted by Bobby Wahlang and Dalene Khonglam, among others. Awards were handed over by Sikkim Governor Shriniwas Patil.
Parents’ Day held
NONGPOH: Parents’ Day was celebrated at Step Up Secondary School at Umden Umroi in Ri Bhoi on Thursday. Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner CP Gotmare, who was also the chief guest at the function, said parents don’t need to spend a lot of money on educating their children as there are various scholarship schemes in states for tribal students. “The Centre has also implemented various schemes like SSA and RTE for compulsory education,” he added. He also urged parents and teachers to work together in educating children. Gotmare also said that parents don’t need to spend much of money on educating their children as there are various scholarship schemes including special category scheme for tribal and minority tribes which they can avail from the Government thereby easing their financial burden. Various entertainment programmes were also conducted by the students and the day ended with prize distribution.
Missing girl
SHILLONG: A sixteen-year-old girl went missing from her residence in the city on October 6. The teenager, identified as Aibahun Kharmalki, daughter of Late Melida Kharmalki, was last seen at her residence in Sohryngkham, Dewsawlain in East Khasi Hills district. In a statement released by the Superintendant of Police of the district, the missing teenager was described as having fair complexion, height of 4ft (approx), round face and long black hair. She was last seen wearing a red and white blouse top with long pants. Any person knowing the whereabouts of the missing teenager is requested to contact the office of the Lumdiengjri Police Station (0364 2548151) or the Police Control room (0364 2222277).
