MAWKYRWAT: Wahkaji village in South West Khasi Hills has finally got a primary health centre (PHC) after more than 20 years of its existence.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Roshan Warjri inaugurated the Wahkaji PHC on Friday in presence of PWD Minister MM Danggo.
Warjri said the villagers have suffered due to the non-functioning of this PHC.
“I understand their suffering, especially in the last three years in which UCIL left the PHC in 2014,” she added.
“Your MLA met me several times to discuss about the PHC and while we were preparing for the inauguration, we also have to repair and make sure that there is sufficient manpower,” she said.
The health minister requested the PHC staff to play an important role in educating villagers about healthcare.
Local MLA Danggo said though it took time to complete the PHC because they have to make sure that there are electricity and water connections, the other problem that they faced was non-availability of doctors.
“We want to make the PHC operationalise long time back but doctors do not want to come to this area,” Danggo said.
The foundation stone for the PHC was laid in June 1997.
