NEIGRIHMS to start radio-diagnosis course

SHILLONG: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) is contemplating to start a diploma course in radio-diagnosis and imaging to produce good technicians to cater to the shortages of radiologists in the Northeastern states.
Speaking at the 43rd Annual Conference of Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA), Assam chapter held in the city on Saturday, Institute’s director, Professor (Dr) DM Thappa said that the institute is also going to have another MRI of sophisticated nature and it is under process.
Thappa maintained that the institute must have robust radio-diagnosis department for the Hospital to progress.
He said two people are very important in the department of radio-diagnosis – one is a radiologist and the other is a technician.
Attended by over 200 delegates from all over the North East states including Sikkim, the conference held for the first time in the state capital was inaugurated by Assam Riffles Director Lt Gen Shokin Chauhan.
Chauhan while addressing the gathering asserted that the role of technology in medical science is a fast evolving entity and radiology is a specialty subject that is highly technological intensive.
He also said that the IRIA, which was set up in 1931 in Calcutta had over the years provided yeoman service in promoting the growth of diagnostic and intervention radiology in India and is actively involved in advising various medical universities besides introducing the latest advances in the specialty field of radiology.
He further placed on record the services extended by the NEIGRIHMS to soldiers in the Assam Rifles deployed all over the North East region and also providing medical care to the people of the region.
