SHILLONG: The deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills, Arun Kembhavi has clarified that all public examinations are prone to what statisticians refer to as Type I and Type II errors — some potentially good candidates fail to make it to the list while some who make it, do not possess the traits that make them good employees.
In his clarification to the news report that appeared in this daily regarding recruitment anomalies, the deputy commissioner said the chairman, member secretary and expert member of the District Selection Committee always award average marks to a candidate during interview since it is not possible to assess the candidate’s acumen within 5 to 10 minutes after a few questions.
“However, what the independent non-official DSC member, who is duly nominated by the state government, decides to award marks to a candidate is beyond the control of the deputy commissioner who is the chairman of the DSC,” the statement said.
According to the deputy commissioner, suggestions such as video recording of the proceedings of the interview, scrapping of the interview, examinations conducted by other authorities and others are outside the purview of the District Selection Committee and hence he would not make comments.
“In the last six months many changes and reforms have been introduced in the District Selection Committee to bolster transparency and swiftness which are for everyone to see and candidates have appreciated wholeheartedly the steps taken by us”, the statement said.
The time gap between the written examination and final results has been reduced to just one month which is unprecedented, the deputy commissioner said. “The administration tries to maintain the highest standards in the District Selection Committee so that only the best and the brightest candidate is employed,” he said.
