TURA: The opposition chief whip in the state assembly and Dadenggre MLA, James Pangsang K Sangma, has questioned the state government’s large scale funding for mega events while traditional festivals are provided with a much smaller  budget.

While addressing the Wangala celebrations at Asananggre on Friday, James Sangma pointed out that the Meghalaya Government spent 91 lakhs last year for the Cherry Blossom festival and this time the amount had crossed the one crore rupees mark.

“While such a huge amount is spent for the Cherry Blossom festival, yet, for Khasi, Jaintia and Garo traditional festivals only Rs 25 lakh was released by the government. I would appeal to the government to provide equal funding for the traditional celebrations also,” said the Dadenggre MLA while expressing his displeasure over the large scale difference in the funding pattern.
