Probe into ‘misuse’ of challans

SHILLONG: With the allegations emerging on the misuse of challans for the transportation of boulders in Jainta Hills, the forest department has ordered an inquiry into the matter. According to sources, an exporter cum miner secured mining plan and environment clearance for his quarry in Nongjri close to Majai border. The allegation is that the transport challans meant for his authorized quarry for extraction and export of boulders, is being misused for loading of old stock boulders through illegal mining from Pynursla for transportation to Dawki through Nongjri in light vehicles.
When contacted, the principal chief conservator of forests, Y S Shullai said that since there are claims and counter claims regarding the matter, an inquiry has been ordered.
“We will wait for the inquiry report”, the official said.
