SHILLONG: United Democratic Party (UDP) senior leader, Bindo M Lanong has claimed that the regional party alone would secure 20-25 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled to be held next year.

“We have got very good candidates everywhere and we will get 20-25 seats,” Lanong said while adding that the party has already started its preparations to contest the elections in a big way.

Lanong also informed that the final list of the party would be released most likely within this month. The UDP had released its first list of 28 candidates in September for 2018 Assembly elections.

Meanwhile, the senior UDP leader also took a jibe at the National People’s Party (NPP) saying most of the leaders who have joined the party have problems in their own respective parties and they were even denied tickets by their earlier parties.

Several politicians from the state including Prestone Tynsong, Rowell Lyngdoh besides UDP’s Remington Pyngrope are set to contest the upcoming Assembly elections from the NPP.

“Judging from their present strength in the state with two MLAs, I don’t see a jump for them in hundreds,” Lanong said

Lanong also prophesized that the NPP at the most would get around 8-10 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections.

The UDP has also forged an alliance with HSPDP and GNC. While discussions for most of the seats with HSPDP is over, the party is also holding parleys with GNC for several seats in Garo Hills.
