SHILLONG: Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) president Ardent Basaiawmoit has shot off a letter to Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on the derecognition of post graduate courses at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).
Basaiawmoit, who is also a member of the State Legislative Assembly, in his letter stated that during inspection by the Medical Council of India (MCI), it was noticed that several departments like anaesthesia, radiology, general surgery and medicine have been recommended for derecognition.
The institute had increased the number of post graduate seats in certain disciplines without the permission of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Basaiawmoit said NEIGRIHMS has not tried to fulfil the deficiencies pointed by the expert committee for running the post graduate courses.
Terming the Director of the institute, Devinder Mohan Thappa, as defiant, the HSPDP leader alleged that he had refused to acknowledge the deficiencies and sent the compliance report to Medical Council of India with some alterations in the appointments of faculty and consequently put the institute at loggerheads with the council.
Expressing disappointment at the apathy of the institute in correcting the deficiencies and taking a definite course of action to comply with the minimum requirements of Medical Council of India, the member of State Legislative Assembly said, “The de-recognition of post graduate courses is a matter of serious concern for students and teachers.”
Basaiawmoit has urged the health minister to examine the matter and redeem the institute and restore its prestige as early as possible.
