KSU demands relief for  storm-hit families

MAWKYRWAT: Khasi Students Union of Ranikor circle has demanded relief funds for another 1044 families under Ranikor community and rural development block who were affected by hailstorms in 2016 and 2017.
KSU Ranikor circle president, Marconi Thongni, said the office of the deputy commissioner, South West Khasi Hills district had sent a proposal to the state revenue and disaster management department requesting funds to the tune of Rs 92, 61,600 for relief payment to 2721 families affected by the hailstorm in 2016 and 2017 in Ranikor block.
Thongni informed that the DC’s office has recently released the relief assistance for another 702 families. However, the money was still pending with the State Bank of India, Mawkyrwat branch and the bank has assured KSU of immediately transferring the money to the accounts of the affected families.
He also said according to an RTI, another 1044 families were yet to get relief assistance because the government till now has not been able to sanction the funds amounting to Rs 34, 53,600.
“Therefore, we have demanded that the revenue and disaster management department should immediately release funds for providing relief to the 1044 families for which the DC’s office has sent the proposal,” Thongni said.
