SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) kicked off its “Connecting to Serve” campaign with a programme at Motphran market on Thursday.
The topic of the programme was “Fundamental rights and duties and free legal aid services.” Legal experts present on the occasion included E. Kharumnuid, chairman, DLSA, AM Pariat, secretary, DLSA and other resource persons. Speakers at the programme addressed the gathering on fundamental rights and duties of the citizens by laying emphasis on the right of equality before law and prohibition of discrimination on the ground of religion. They also enlightened the people about the availability of free legal aid services and the services of para-legal volunteers and legal aid counsels.
A street play on domestic violence was also organised with para-legal volunteers of Lady Keane College taking part in it. The campaign was organised to create awareness among the public about their fundamental rights and duties as well as the aims and objectives of the legal services authority, to help the weaker and marginalised sections of society and to reach out to the needy and secure socio economic and political justice.
