TURA: Villagers from Achotchongre and Korepara areas in Mendal region of North Garo Hills district have approached the deputy commissioner of the district and also the executive engineer of the PWD roads division to complain about the delay in completion of the central road projects under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in their village areas for the last two and a half years.
Village elders under the Achotchongre Area Development Committee met DC Sashu and called on the executive engineer on Friday to question the long delay in completing the project.
“Due to neglect and slow process into the project by the lady contractor who hails from Kusimkolgre locality of Williamnagar, not even 40 percent of the work has gotten completed while the date for commencement of the road construction began more than two and a half years back. Residents from the area are facing immense difficulties in travelling, carrying goods, and the situation is worst during the monsoon rains,” alleged Garo Students Union Mendal unit general secretary Samar R Marak.
The villagers together with NGOs have urged upon the PWD authorities to hasten the road construction by deploying in sufficient earth excavation machines, dumper trucks and labour.
According to the NGOs there are close to half a dozen PMGSY road projects currently under construction and most of the ongoing projects have shown positive work except for the Achotchongre and Korepara road project.
While the villagers have appreciated the central and state government for bringing in the PMGSY project to their region, they want the government to look into the issue before time runs out and the construction season ends before the next monsoon.
