SHILLONG: BJP state president Shibun Lyngdoh has welcomed the pay hike move but alleged that it was the Congress-led government’s poll gimmick.
Reacting to the decision on Saturday, a day after the Cabinet approved the revised pay that will be effective from January 1, 2017, Lyngdoh said, “Looking at the financial position of the state, it seems that the government took the decision in view of the upcoming polls.”
“It just wants to put the burden on the next government as it feels that it is not coming back to power,” he added.
‘Increase wages
of workers’
Meanwhile, senior UDP leader Bindo M Lanong said the state government
should also increase the wages of skilled workers, labourers and other categories of people.
Responding to a query about the new pay package, Lanong said the party is happy about the decision “as long as the government can pay it”.
Now, government employees will receive the new pay with an overall hike of 268 percent from next month.
Lanong pointed out that the quality of work needs to be improved at every level and people should be more dedicated.
The UDP working president also asked the government to clear all pending bills of contractors and suppliers of different departments.
