SHILLONG: Assam is yet to respond to the plea of Meghalaya to hold border talks at the earliest.
An official source said despite several reminders for holding talks, Assam government had not responded.
The official added that earlier, Chief Secretary Y. Tsering had also taken up the matter with his counterpart. The dialogue with Assam assumes significance since Meghalaya is preparing for the Assembly polls.
There are many sensitive areas along the border, including Langpih, which need special attention by both Assam and Meghalaya in the run-up to the polls.
Recently, Meghalaya government had written to Assam requesting it to fix any date from November 13. Earlier, the state government had proposed any day between September 19 and 22 for discussing pending border issues. However, there was no response from Assam.
It was on April 1 this year during the chief ministerial level talks held in Guwahati that the chief secretaries of both the states were asked to pursue the dialogue.
Subsequently, Tsering had written to his Assam counterpart to fix a date for holding talks, but in vain.
Later, Assam asked the state government to suggest a date and accordingly.
If the talks are held, the main point of discussion would be on 12 areas of difference, which are Upper Tarabari, Gizang Reserve Forest, Hahim, Langpih, Borduar, Boklapara, Nongwah-Matamur, Khanapara-Pillangkata, Desdemoreah, Block I and Block II, Khanduli-Psiar and Ratacherra.
