NONGSTOIN: Congress MP Vincent H Pala has underlined the importance of institutions dedicated to science and technology education in the state.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 10th anniversary celebrations of Mairang Presbyterian Science College as chief guest, Pala lauded the farsightedness of the founders of the college to set up an institution dedicated to science education which is crucial in promoting science and technology besides generating manpower for the growth of the state.
“Science has become an important part of our day today lives,” he said, after releasing the college souvenir.
Pala said students in the science stream have a great advantage, particularly in the present day where there is constant growth in technology.
The MP hoped that the knowledge imparted by the college to its students should not end within the boundaries of Mairang, but should spread through its past pupils across the state and country.
The two-week long celebration started on November 3. EL Nongrang, MDC, Mairang constituency and R Thangkhiew, founder principal among others were present at the function.
Established in 2006, Mairang Presbyterian Science College is the only science college in West Khasi Hills district and also the only college in the state devoted exclusively to the teaching of science and mathematics. The college is provisionally affiliated to the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) while its Higher Secondary section is under Meghalaya Board of School Education.
The college was established with the objective to provide access to higher education in science and mathematics, particularly to the economically disadvantaged rural students who could not afford to pursue higher studies in other places.
The ceremony concluded with the distribution of certificates and prizes among winners of different competitions.
