Veteran actor Biju Phukon passes away

GUWAHATI:   Noted actor Biju Phukon who have acted in about 80 Assamese and Bengali movies during his decades long career, breathed his last on Wednesday afternoon at Apollo Hospital here the age of 70. His death has cast a pall gloom in the state especially among the people associated with the state’s cultural arena.

Born on February 18, 1947, Biju Phukon started his career in filmdom in 1970 with a key role in one of the most popular Assamese movie, Dr Bezbaruah. He is survived by wife Rajashree Phukon nd two children.

Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi condoled the death of popular Assamese actor Biju Phukan. In a statement made here Prof. Mukhi said, “I am deeply saddened by his death who hugely contributed to popularise Assamese cinema. With his death a void will be created which will be hard to be filled. I extend my condolences to the bereaved family and his fans. May his soul rest in peace”.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also mourned the demise of the veteran film actor from the state.In a condolence message Sonowal said, “I am grieved and saddened by the sudden demise of Biju Phukan who is largely responsible for promoting Assamese film industry and brought it to the present status”. His contributions will be remembered by posterity.”

“Biju Phukan enriched Assamese cinema with his immortal roles in the films like Dr. Bezbaruah, Ajoli Nobou, Boari, Ghar-Sansar, Devi, Agni-Snan, Pita-Putra and so on. His death is an irreparable loss to the society,” the CM stated.

He also empathised with the bereaved family members and prayed to the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul. Chief Minister Sonowal who is on an official tour to Upper Assam has asked his Media Adviser Hrishikesh Goswami to rush to late Biju Phukan’s house and be with the family at this difficult time. He also talked over phone and expressed his empathy with the bereaved family members. Chief Minister Sonowal asked Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia to take steps to complete his last rites with full state honour.
