DALU: The national secretary of the BJP’s women wing has called upon the womenfolk of Garo Hills to come forward and support the party to ensure the party’s victory in next year’s state elections promising developmental schemes that will benefit both mother and child in the long term.
The all India national secretary of the BJP’s Mahila Morcha, Pooja Mishra, on Thursday, took part in a Mahila Karyakarta Sammelan of the women’s wing in the border town of Dalu in West Garo Hills.
Dalu, which is part of Barengapara assembly constituency, was the first legislative seat which the BJP won in the mid-90s’ when party candidate Late Nityanarayan Simchang gave a shock defeat to Congress strongman and then sports minister Archibald Sangma
.“Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is very concerned about the wellbeing of the country’s women and children,
so to end the unhealthy dependence on firewood cooking which leads to many lung diseases, he introduced the free cooking gas connection for families who depend on firewood cooking across the country,” national secretary Pooja Mishra said during the public rally.
She revealed that she had been deputed by the Prime Minister to visit the state of Meghalaya to see firsthand the condition of the state’s women and children.
“It is shocking that the Congress government has failed to provide better amenities for women and children and all throughout my visit in Meghalaya I came across villages in which young girls and elderly women were seen fetching firewood to take home for use in their cooking. This should not be happening in today’s era when cooking gas is available,” Mishra said.
Highlighting the Modi government’s various schemes for women and children she said the state must provide adequate awareness about the availability of such schemes where the centre provides the funding. She gave an example of the financial perks being offered for pregnant mothers who undergo institutional delivery.
“Our party is a strong advocate for the motto-Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child. And Meghalaya as a matrilineal state has a very important role to play for woman and child,” she added.
The first and only Garo MLA from Assam, Dr Numal Momin, also attended the public rally at Dalu in which he criticized the Mukul Sangma Government for the failure to provide proper roads in the state.
“Earlier, to reach Dalu from Tura it took around 55 minutes. Now, the road condition is so terrible that two and a half hours was needed to arrive in the border town from the district headquarters. This is the kind of development that the Congress government is providing in Garo Hills,” lashed out Dr Momin who has been elected from Bokajan constituency of Assam.
Taking a dig at the Congress in Meghalaya he suggested that they visit Assam and see the kind of development that is taking place under the BJP.
A host of other party leaders including state vice president of mahila morcha, Moromi K Marak, minority morcha state president and sitting MDC Sofiur Rahman, state kisan morcha president K C Boro, among other,s also addressed the public rally.
