Training for dairy farmers held

SHILLONG: The District Rural Development Agencies in West Jaintia Hills organised a one-day exposure cum training programme for dairy farmers held at Umlyngka on Saturday.
The milk producers from West Jaintia Hills were trained in various methods of cattle farming, use of feeds, medicines, record maintenance, infrastructure developments and maintenance of the cattle sheds. The visiting team were shown on how the quality of milk is tested before sale.
P Kharbteng and members of the Umlyngka Primary Milk Producer Co-operative Society shared their experiences when the society was started in 1987 and when he started his work as a cattle farmer supplying milk with only two cows.
The society is currently earning more than Rs 45 lakh a month from the milk collected from its 112 members.
A field visit to the sheds was also made by the team. Members of the visiting team expressed their happiness to the opportunity to learn from the Umlyngka farmers.
“The purpose of the interaction cum training programme is to make the farmers understand the economic importance and sustainability of the activity which is an important source of income and livelihood in rural areas,” said Donny M.Wallang, PD DRDA & Vice Chairperson, Basin Development Unit, West Jaintia Hills.
