TURA: In what may be termed a mindless act of street crime, a young school teacher of Christian Boys’ School in Tura was severely assaulted by two drunken youth at Fancy Valley locality of the town on Monday leading to his hospitalization.

The victim Chanchal Das, who teaches science in the upper primary section of Christian Boys’ School, was heading home from his school in Mission Compound when the attack took place at around 4:30 in the afternoon.

As he was making his way through Fancy Valley’s Durga Mandap, en route to visit a neighbour to seek help from her son to donate blood for his ailing mother, two young men who appeared to be drunk provoked him without any reason and began to assault him.

He sustained multiple injuries on his face, head, and upper body including his eyes.

He was saved from further assault as locals rushed out to catch the two attackers who quickly fled on seeing the residents come out to aid the victim.

The injured teacher has since been admitted into Tura Civil Hospital.

A police FIR has been lodged against the attackers who are alleged to hail from Akonggre and Sepoy Colony area.

The teaching fraternity of Tura has expressed shock over the assault and is demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits.

“We can’t understand the reason behind assaulting a teacher. Teachers are here only for one purpose which is to teach and ensure a child gets proper education. Is it a crime to teach?” questioned a school teacher who along with many others from the teaching fraternity has expressed concern over the targeting of educationists by criminals.
