SHILLONG: Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma has defended the decision of the three senior Congress leaders including DD Lapang to back out from contesting the Assembly elections.

“Our president (Lapang) told me that he is 85 years and another 5 years will make him 90 years,” Mukul Sangma said

According to Sangma, DD Lapang is confident that the party would surely win   from Nongpoh constituency and so he wanted to relieve himself.

“Now he (DD Lapang) can focus more as President as he is now relieved of extra burden of being in the fray,” Sangma said adding that the decision of not contesting the elections does not mean retiring from politics.

Sangma said that the decision of the leaders not to contest the polls must be respected   since it is based on certain understandings with full commitment to help the party in whatever possible way.

Sangma also foresaw that in 2023 elections, many more leaders in the state not necessarily   from Congress party will take similar call of not contesting the election.

It may be mentioned that three senior leaders from Congress including DD Lapang, RC Laloo and Roshan Warjri recently decided not to contest the upcoming Assembly polls.
