SHILLONG: The NPP is planning to build a consensus on moving a no confidence motion against the state government during the three-day Assembly winter session from December 8.
NPP legislator and Opposition chief whip James Sangma said on Wednesday that he would try to build a consensus among all the Opposition members and the rebels in the ruling Congress before moving the no confidence motion.
In fact, Sangma said that after a long wait, scheduling the session just for three days itself would be a reason for moving the no confidence motion.
The Business Advisory Committee in its meeting on Wednesday fixed December 8, 13 and 14 for the last Assembly session of the Congress-led MUA-II government.
“Out of the three days, only one day is allotted to private members which itself calls for moving a no confidence motion against the government,” Sangma asserted.
He also said there were other serious reasons including financial crunch and scams which would compel him to move a no trust motion.
However, Opposition leader Donkupar Roy said while there is a move on the part of NPP to table the no confidence motion during the session, the UDP was not in favour of the idea as time was too short.
“Now, everyone is preparing for the Assembly polls and there is hardly any time for moving the no confidence motion,” he said.
He said UDP, however, would raise issues concerning cancellation of power projects, plight of teachers, delay in problems related to export of limestone and lack of adequate development initiatives by the government during the session.
Sources said if a no confidence motion was taken up against the government during the forthcoming session, chances are that the government may be reduced to a minority as the combined Opposition, Independents and the Congress rebels would have the strength of 32 members in the House of 60.
