SHILLONG: The Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF) comprising UDP and NPP will meet to discuss on whether to go ahead with the no-confidence motion.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, UDP secretary Jemino Mawthoh said, “We will meet and discuss with fellow opposition members as it was felt that there is a need to move a no-confidence motion (against the Speaker).”
“Will take a consultative decision on this matter as individual account is not valid,” he added.
MPF decided to move no-trust after NPP legislator James Sangma submitted a resolution to the Assembly Secretariat for the removal of Speaker AT Mondal. It was seen as an indirect move to topple the government.
According to the official source, the letter submitted on November 21 is in order since 14 days’ duration is needed to take up the resolution against the Speaker.
Short Assembly session
Mawthoh expressed disappointment that the winter session will be for a short duration. “It is very unfortunate that we have only three days. There is not much to discuss about in those three days,” he said.
According to him, with the state preparing for the elections, there will be many things for discussion and “it will be difficult in less time”.
The winter session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will be on December 8, 13 and 14.
Common minimum programme
Asked on the common minimum programme of the UDP-HSPDP alliance, Mawthoh said, “Consultation is on to come to an understanding.”
He added that UDP’s common minimum programme will be released at the general council of the party on December 15. “There will be consultations before and after the release of the programme with HSPDP to discuss on common issues.”
On Remington Pyngrope who is likely to join NPP, Mawthoh said the matter is still with the UDP disciplinary committee.
