POSCO court awards 4 year jail

SHILLONG: A special POCSO Court in Ri Bhoi district on Tuesday sentenced one Jopstar Kharthangmaw for four years’ rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 5000.

 Ri Bhoi SP Ramesh Singh informed that the accused was sentenced in a 2013 case registered in Umiam Police Station.

 “It is an important judgment that is important in the efforts of the State to fight crime against children and it will deter criminals, and encourage people to report child abuse to police,” he said 

 If the convict fails to pay fine, he will have to serve another two months in prison.

 According to Singh, the victim was   given a compensation of Rs 25000. The co accused, Tynshain Kurbah died in a road accident.

Police said that the crime was committed when the girl was followed by the two accused persons when she was returning back after shopping. The incident has happened at   Lawbyrwa village.
