GUWAHATI:  It was the boyfriend Govind Singhal (21) who murdered the city’s college girl Shweta Agarwala on Monday last at his residence at Shantipur area in the city, police claimed on Wednesday.

The city Police Commissioner, Hiren Chandra Nath on Wednesday claimed to have cracked the case of murder of the B. Com third year student Shweta Agarwala and claimed that crime was committed by her boyfriend Govind Singhal following a quarrel at the boy’s residence on Monday afternoon. Her body was later burnt by the accused pouring kerosene oil on it.

The police official informed that according to the confession made by Govind who is now in police custody along with his mother and sister, he took Shweta from college to his rented residence at Shantipur area in the city on Monday afternoon and both were engaged in a heated exchange over the issue of their marriage at around 2-30 P.M. and Govind hit Shweta’s head on the wall in a feat of rage that proved fatal for her. He first put the body into a gunny back and loaded onto his motorcycle to throw it into a nearby stream but failed to do so as there were people around. So he brought back the body and burnt it using kerosene oil inside the lavatory of their house where the charred body of the girl was recovered by police.

The Police Commissioner further quoting the confession statement of Govind said that his mother and sister were not there at home when Shweta was murdered but were present when the body was set on fire by him. The police official said the investigation team was trying to corroborate the confession statements of all the three arrested persons.

Regarding the cause of the quarrel, the Police Commissioner informed that Govind and Shweta were having an affair since May, 2016 and the girl used to visit his place now and then though the girl’s family was not aware of their relationship. Govind confessed that Shweta had been pressurising Govind to meet her family with a proposal for marriage as Govind’s family was planning to shift to Siliguri in North Bengal soon, but Govind was not relenting and it was the cause of the bitter quarrel on the fateful day too.

Police are trying to recover the mobile phone and some other belongings of Shweta from which, Govind claimed to have thrown into a nearby stream.

The City Police Commissioner further informed that investigation team was probing the technical details of the murder and more clarity was expected once the post-mortem report became available to police.

He said Shweta was a brilliant student and she along with Govind were also pursuing CA in a private firm besides B.Com. in K C Das Commerce College in the city. Shweta had cleared two more examinations in the CA course than Govind who is a mediocre student. Govind was also opposed to Shweta taking two separate coaching class as she had graduated to an advanced stage of the CA course.

Shweta’s father, OM Prakash Agarwal, a tax consultant who resides at Manipuri Basti area in the city alleged that his daughter was raped and murdered by Govind. He, however, denied any knowledge about Shweta having an affair with Govind, but acknowledged that both of them working together in a CA firm in the city along with two other girls. Govind’s father, R S Shinghal was stated to be away in Jaipur on a business trip on the fateful day.
