SHILLONG: Meghalaya is performing better than its neighbour Assam when it comes to Aadhaar enrolment despite opposition by a few local organisations.
The website of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) shows that 5,37,811 Aadhaar numbers have been generated till November 30 for a population of 3,230,132 in Meghalaya, which gives the saturation percentage of 16.6.
The number is better than Assam where the saturation percentage is 7.3, the lowest among the northeastern states.
Tripura has the highest saturation percentage of 89.4 among the northeastern states. This is followed by Sikkim at 87.7 per cent.
According to the website, Aadhaar saturation in Meghalaya till 5 years of age is only 0.1 per cent with 529 generated unique numbers out of a total population of 442,621.
Aadhaar saturation for 5-18 years age category is 11.3 per cent with a total of 383,938 generated Aadhaar out of a projected population of 1,065,297.
While there are many who have enrolled for the unique identification number, as many as 1,202 people have sought to withdraw from Aadhaar in the state between October 30 and November 3.
Meanwhile, Aadhaar enrolment has also picked up pace in East Khasi Hills and it is almost complete in Shillong city except in few areas.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar informed that around 38 per cent of the population in the district has been covered under Aadhaar.
“Now we are concentrating on rural areas as there is a big rush and people are coming forward,” he said.
At present, enrolment is being conducted in block offices and even in the Secretariat.
